Difference Day: World Press Freedom Day

Others, published on 08 April 2015 Download document

The Brussels Platform for Journalism, a joint initiative with Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Université Libre de Bruxelles and Erasmushogeschool Brussel, together with BOZAR - Centre for Fine Arts, the Evens Foundation and iMinds, organize Difference Day - the European Gala for Freedom of Expression, to take place in Brussels on 3rd May each year, starting in 2015.

In 1993, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 3 May as World Press Freedom Day. It serves as a yearly occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom worldwide and to raise awareness for the work journalists; editors and publishers are doing to preserve the democratic value of their profession. Fundamentally, taking this commemoration more broadly, it is about freedom of expression, with respect for difference and the broad variety of voices, opinions and views.
